Northern Tanzania is spread across real distances, so a ten-day trip lets you experience Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti without feeling rushed between any of them. Each stop has its own character, and the order you visit them in shapes how the whole trip feels.

This is the sequence that tends to work best for a first visit, along with how to extend it.

01

Easing in among Tarangire's giants

Flights land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, and Tarangire is a short transfer from there, making it a sensible first stop. Its ancient baobabs and large elephant herds offer excellent viewing with noticeably fewer vehicles than the more famous parks, which makes it a relaxed introduction to Tanzania's pace.

Twin elephants, a male and female, were delivered at the end of May 2018 by 39-year old "Paru," on the left, who lives in a herd of around 40 elephants. Kenyan Wildlife Service officials say surviving twin births amongst elephants is rare, with the last known birth of surviving elephant twins taking place in Amboseli in 1980. Given the sheer size of the animals, twin births are rare, as gestation of African elephants normally lasts for around 22-months. In July 2018, I was fortunate enough to seCredits

02

A single, memorable day in the crater

Descending into Ngorongoro Crater early in the morning, before the light hardens and other vehicles arrive, is worth the alarm clock. One full day inside the crater, paired with a highlands walk or a visit to a nearby coffee farm, balances an intense wildlife day with something slower.

03

A long Serengeti finish

Four or five nights in the Serengeti rounds out the trip as its genuine highlight, and splitting that time between two regions makes sense if the migration herds are on the move. Ending here means your final morning drive takes place on some of the richest plains in Africa rather than during a transfer day.

Nature's masterpiece is that every year the plains of East Africa are home to the world's greatest wildlife spectacles movement, whereby more than 1.4 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle move from one place of Tanzania to Kenya in search of good food, water and breading grounds. This great migration is often described as a set circuit that occurs between Tanzania's Serengeti plains in the south and Kenya's Maasai Mara in the north, but the reality of the migration iCredits

04

Extending towards the coast

With twelve to fourteen days available, a flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar adds three or four nights of beach time, giving the trip a classic bush-then-beach structure that many travellers find hard to beat.

Frequently asked questions

Is ten days too long for a Tanzania safari?

Not really; the distances between parks are genuine, and the Serengeti alone rewards several nights. Travellers rarely say afterward that they wish they had cut a day.

Can this route be timed to the migration?

Yes, your Serengeti nights can be positioned wherever the herds happen to be that month, which does shift the exact routing slightly.

Is Lake Manyara worth adding?

It can be a pleasant extra day if your routing allows, but for a first trip Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti remain the priority.
