Brochures make Kenya and Tanzania sound interchangeable. They are not. One is cheaper, faster to reach and easier to combine with a beach; the other has the larger wilderness and the crater. Uganda and Rwanda are a different trip altogether.

We do not have a house favourite. We ask how long you have, how far you will drive, and whether gorillas matter — the answer usually falls out of those three.

01

Kenya vs Tanzania

The two classic choices, and the real differences between them.

  • Kenya — shorter internal flights, private conservancies with off-road and night drives, lower park fees, easy beach add-on at Diani or Lamu
  • Tanzania — bigger, wilder parks, Ngorongoro Crater, longer transfers, higher fees, Zanzibar within an hour of the Serengeti
  • Migration — visible in both; Tanzania for calving and most of the year, Kenya for July to October crossings
  • First safari on a week — Kenya usually wins on travel time; two weeks and Tanzania comes into its own

02

Uganda vs Rwanda for gorillas

Rwanda is fast and polished: two and a half hours from Kigali to the trailhead, higher permit cost, a trip you can do in three nights. Uganda costs less per permit, adds chimpanzees in Kibale and tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, and needs a longer drive or a charter flight.

03

Where Zanzibar fits

Zanzibar is the beach half of a Tanzanian safari and, increasingly, of a Kenyan one. It is not a safari destination itself, and four nights is the minimum that makes the flights worth it.

04

Combining countries

Kenya with Tanzania, or either with Rwanda, works well on ten to fourteen days provided you fly the long legs. Three countries in under two weeks is usually a mistake, and we will say so.

Questions about comparing east african destinations

Is the itinerary really free?

Yes. You receive a costed, day-by-day itinerary with no payment and no obligation. You only pay once you decide to secure the trip.

What does the quoted price include?

Accommodation, meals as listed, your private guide and vehicle, park and conservancy fees and the transfers or flights shown. Every inclusion and exclusion is listed line by line on your proforma.

How do I secure my safari?

A 50% deposit holds your camps and flights. The balance is due closer to departure, and we send reminders well ahead of the due date.

Can I change the itinerary?

Anything can change before you book: camps, number of nights, the order of parks, adding a beach finish or switching between luxury and ultra-luxury.

Is it a group tour?

No. Every journey is private — your own guide and vehicle, leaving when you are ready and stopping when you want.

Every Perch Africa journey is built from scratch.
