Kenya can deliver migration drama, intimate conservancy game viewing, elephant country and a warm Indian Ocean finish in one well-paced journey. The right route depends on your month, the number of nights and how much time you want to spend moving between regions.

Use this guide as a starting point. Permit rules, park fees, airline schedules and camp availability can change, so your final itinerary confirms the current details for your dates.

01

When to go

July to October is the driest and busiest period, with migration herds often in the Maasai Mara. January to March is warm and generally drier, while the green seasons bring lush landscapes, young animals and fewer visitors.

  • July–October: dry-season wildlife and migration season
  • January–March: warm days and excellent general game viewing
  • Green months: quieter camps and dramatic skies

02

What to pack

Choose light, neutral layers rather than special safari clothing. Early drives can be cold, midday can be hot and small aircraft have strict luggage limits.

  • Light long-sleeved shirts and neutral trousers
  • Warm layer and compact rain jacket
  • Closed shoes, sun hat, sunscreen and binoculars
  • Soft-sided luggage for light aircraft

03

What shapes the cost

Season, camp location, transport and exclusivity drive the final price. Conservancy stays and fly-in routes cost more, but can offer quieter sightings and more time in the bush.

  • Travel month and number of nights
  • Classic, luxury or ultra-luxury accommodation
  • Road transfers, scheduled flights or private charters
  • Park, reserve and conservancy fees

04

A logical first route

For a first visit, combine no more than two or three wildlife regions before the coast. Build towards the Maasai Mara or another defining finale instead of repeating similar game drives in too many parks.

  • Amboseli and the Maasai Mara
  • Samburu, Laikipia and the Maasai Mara
  • Maasai Mara followed by Diani or Watamu
