Trekking is tightly controlled to protect the gorillas: small groups, a minimum age of 15, and a single hour once your family is found.

01

Permits

Permits are limited per family per day and sell out months ahead in peak season. We secure them before confirming the rest of your trip.

02

Fitness

Treks range from under an hour to most of the day at altitude. Moderate fitness is enough; rangers set the pace.

03

What to wear

Protect yourself from nettles and mud.

  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Long trousers and sleeves
  • Gardening gloves
  • Rain jacket

04

Porters

Hiring a local porter helps with bags and steep sections, and directly supports communities around the parks.

05

A trek day step by step

Briefing at park headquarters around 07:00, allocation to a gorilla family by fitness, a drive to the trailhead, then a hike of one to six hours with trackers ahead. Once found, you spend one hour with the family.

06

What to wear and carry

Long trousers tucked into socks, waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket and gardening gloves for nettles.

  • 2 litres of water and a packed lunch
  • Camera without flash
  • Hire a local porter — it supports the community and helps on steep ground

07

Rules that protect the gorillas

Keep 7 metres away, wear a mask if asked, and do not trek if you have a cold. Gorillas share much of our DNA and catch human illnesses easily.

08

Best time to trek

The drier months of June–September and December–February make trails easier, but trekking runs year-round and permits are easier to secure in the rains.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be?

Moderately fit. Treks can be steep, muddy and at altitude; porters and walking sticks help a lot.

How early should I buy permits?

Six to twelve months ahead for peak months, as daily numbers per family are strictly limited.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes — park rules set a minimum age for trekkers. We confirm the current rule for your chosen park when booking.

Yes. You receive a costed, day-by-day itinerary with no payment and no obligation. You only pay once you decide to secure the trip.

What does the quoted price include?

Accommodation, meals as listed, your private guide and vehicle, park and conservancy fees and the transfers or flights shown. Every inclusion and exclusion is listed line by line on your proforma.

How do I secure my safari?

A 50% deposit holds your camps and flights. The balance is due closer to departure, and we send reminders well ahead of the due date.
