Ngorongoro Crater safari: what to expect
A collapsed volcano packed with wildlife — one descent into Ngorongoro Crater can realistically deliver lion, elephant, buffalo and black rhino.
Ngorongoro Crater Tour · Tanzania safari · Tanzania safari holidays
Give your Ngorongoro day a little breathing room: the drive and entry arrangements matter too. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most concentrated wildlife areas in Africa, formed by a collapsed volcano whose floor now holds a near-permanent population of game. A single well-timed day can cover most of the Big Five, rhino included, which is unusual anywhere else in East Africa.
Where to stay for a crater visit
| Location | Access time | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Crater rim lodge | Shortest, dramatic views | Highest demand, can feel busy |
| Highlands nearby | Slightly longer drive down | Quieter, often better value |
| Karatu town area | Longer drive, most affordable | Furthest from crater entrance |
Highlights
- A day on the crater floor
- Staying on the rim or further out
- Where it fits on a northern circuit
01
A day on the crater floor
Descending early avoids the queue of vehicles that builds through mid-morning, and gives a quieter first hour or two. Most itineraries allow a half-day or full-day descent, with lunch at a designated picnic site on the crater floor.

02
Staying on the rim or further out
Rim lodges offer dramatic views directly into the crater and the shortest access time, at a premium. Camps and lodges set back in the surrounding highlands are quieter and generally better value, at the cost of a slightly longer drive down.

03
Where it fits on a northern circuit
Ngorongoro sits naturally between Tarangire and the Serengeti, making it a logical middle stop on a northern Tanzania safari rather than a standalone destination.
