Tarangire and Lake Manyara: the underrated start to Tanzania
Most northern Tanzania itineraries rush past Tarangire and Lake Manyara — give them a night each and they hold their own against the headline parks.
Tarangire National Park · Lake Manyara · Tanzania safari packages
Before you rush north to the Serengeti, consider whether Tarangire or Manyara belongs in your route. Tarangire and Lake Manyara are often treated as a drive-through on the way to the Serengeti, but a night or two at each reveals genuinely distinct landscapes: ancient baobabs and huge elephant herds at Tarangire, and groundwater forest beneath the Rift escarpment at Manyara.
Tarangire and Manyara against skipping both
| Option | Gains | Cost in time |
|---|---|---|
| Tarangire (1-2 nights) | Huge elephant herds, baobab scenery | Adds a day to the circuit |
| Lake Manyara (1 night) | Forest and escarpment variety | Adds a day to the circuit |
| Drive straight through | Saves time | Misses both parks' highlights |
Highlights
- Tarangire's elephants and baobabs
- Lake Manyara's compact variety
- Sequencing the circuit
01
Tarangire's elephants and baobabs
Tarangire holds some of Tanzania's largest elephant herds, which concentrate along the Tarangire River during the dry season, roughly June to October, when water elsewhere in the park becomes scarce.

02
Lake Manyara's compact variety
Within a small area, Manyara packs groundwater forest, a soda lake and the base of the Rift Valley escarpment, making for a gentle, scenically varied first game drive of a Tanzania trip.

03
Sequencing the circuit
Starting with Tarangire, moving on to Ngorongoro and finishing in the Serengeti lets the trip build toward its strongest days rather than opening with them.
