The perfect 7-day Kenya safari itinerary
A week is enough time to see several faces of Kenya properly, provided the days are arranged in the right order. Here is a route that builds momentum rather than fizzling out.
Kenya Safari Packages · 7 day Kenya safari · Kenya safari holidays
One week is the most common length for a first Kenya safari, and for good reason: it allows two or three distinct landscapes without constant packing and unpacking. The trick is sequencing, since starting and ending in the wrong place can leave a trip feeling front-loaded or anticlimactic.
Below is the shape that tends to work best, along with sensible variations if your interests lean elsewhere.
Three ways to shape a 7-day Kenya route
| Route style | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Amboseli then Mara | First-timers wanting elephants and big cats | Longer road or flight transfer between the two |
| Laikipia then Mara | Travellers who want walking safaris and variety | Slightly higher cost per night in Laikipia |
| Mara split across two conservancies | Photographers and repeat visitors | Less landscape variety across the week |
Highlights
- Settling in before the main event
- A gentler middle chapter
- Finishing where the game viewing is strongest
- Ways to adjust the formula
01
Settling in before the main event
Most flights land in Nairobi in the evening, so plan one restful night near the airport before moving on. From there, heading somewhere quieter first, such as Amboseli or the Laikipia plateau, eases you into the rhythm of early mornings and slow driving before you reach the busier Mara.

02
A gentler middle chapter
Amboseli is known for large elephant herds crossing open plains with Kilimanjaro behind them, while Laikipia offers walking safaris, horseback outings and a strong conservation story. Two nights in either gives you several drives plus a slower morning to simply sit and watch.

03
Finishing where the game viewing is strongest
Save the Masai Mara for last. It consistently delivers the richest concentration of wildlife in Kenya, so ending there means the trip peaks rather than trails off. Three nights allows roughly six drives, time for an optional early balloon flight, and a spare day if weather disrupts your plans.

04
Ways to adjust the formula
If a beach finish appeals, swap the Amboseli nights for three days on the coast after the Mara. Photographers chasing a single subject sometimes prefer all seven nights split across two different Mara conservancies instead of changing regions at all.

Frequently asked questions
Is a week really enough time in Kenya?
Yes, for two or three regions at a relaxed pace. Add extra days if you want a beach extension or a third wildlife area.
Should I fly or drive between parks?
Flying is quicker and adds aerial views of the landscape; driving costs less and shows you the countryside between parks. Many week-long trips use a mix of both.
Does this route work with children along?
Yes, with some adjusting: shorter drive segments, family-oriented camps and built-in pool time all help keep the pace comfortable for younger travellers.
