Maasai Mara safari packages: how to choose the right one

Reserve or conservancy, road or light aircraft, three nights or five — the choices that actually shape a Mara safari, explained plainly.

The Maasai Mara sells more safari nights than anywhere else in Kenya, and every brochure photo looks the same until you dig into the itinerary. Three decisions do the real work: where you sleep, how you get there and how long you stay. Get those right and the rest of the trip tends to fall into place.

01

Reserve or conservancy

Camps inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve put you closest to the Mara and Talek rivers, useful if the wildebeest crossings (roughly July to October) are your priority. The neighbouring conservancies — Mara North, Naboisho, Olare Motorogi — limit vehicle numbers per sighting and allow night drives and guided walks, which the reserve does not.

  • Reserve: best river-crossing access, busier at peak sightings
  • Conservancy: capped vehicles, night drives, often better predator viewing

02

Drive or fly

Driving from Nairobi takes five to six hours depending on road conditions and season. A scheduled light-aircraft flight is under an hour and usually lands in time for an afternoon game drive — in effect buying back a day of the trip.

03

How many nights

Three nights is a sensible minimum; it allows for one lost drive to weather or a slow start. Four nights gives a real chance of following one pride or a cheetah family across several days rather than a single sighting. If time is short, it is usually better to shorten a Nairobi stopover than the Mara itself.

How many nights: Cheetah on The Hunt, Maasai Mara (45006355245)
The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a large cat of the subfamily Felinae that occurs in Southern, North and East Africa, and a few localities in Iran. The species is IUCN Red Listed as vulnerable, as it suffered a substantial decline in its historic range in the 20th century due to habitat loss, poaching, illegal pet trade, and conflict with humans. By 2016, the global cheetah population has been estimated at approximately 7,100 individuals in the wild. Several African countries have taken steps tCredits
