Pemba and Mafia: Tanzania's quiet islands
For travellers who find Zanzibar's main island too busy, Pemba and Mafia offer a slower, greener and far quieter alternative just a short flight away.
Pemba Island · Mafia Island · Zanzibar beaches
If you're drawn to a quieter island stay, compare Pemba and Mafia before you book. Beyond Unguja, the main island most people mean when they say Zanzibar, lie two quieter islands with their own distinct character: Pemba to the north and Mafia to the south.
Both suit travellers prioritising diving, solitude and a slower pace over beach bars and nightlife.
Pemba versus Mafia
| Island | Signature activity | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Pemba | Wall diving | Experienced divers seeking strong currents |
| Mafia | Whale shark snorkelling (seasonal) | Snorkellers and casual divers |
| Unguja (main Zanzibar) | Beaches, Stone Town | First-time visitors wanting more infrastructure |
Highlights

- Getting there
01
Pemba Island
Pemba's steep, green hills are covered in clove plantations rather than the flatter coconut groves of Unguja, giving it a noticeably different landscape.
Its surrounding coral walls, dropping sharply into deep channel water, rank among the best diving sites in East Africa, with strong currents suiting experienced divers in particular.

02
Mafia Island
Mafia's marine park protects extensive coral gardens and seagrass beds, and the island is one of the more reliable places in the western Indian Ocean to snorkel alongside whale sharks in season.
Accommodation is limited and low-key, which keeps the island genuinely quiet even by Zanzibar archipelago standards.

03
Getting there
Short light-aircraft flights connect both islands to Zanzibar's main airport and to Dar es Salaam, usually taking well under an hour.

When are whale sharks at Mafia?
They are most reliably seen from around October to March, when plankton concentrations draw them close to shore, though sightings can vary year to year.
