Best Zanzibar beaches compared
Zanzibar's beaches vary more than they look on a map, since tides and wind patterns change sharply from one coast to the next.
Zanzibar Beaches · safari and beach holidays · Zanzibar honeymoon
Choosing the right stretch of sand on Zanzibar depends less on the photographs and more on what you want to spend your days doing, whether that's kitesurfing, swimming or quiet diving.
Wind and tide, which vary by coast and season, matter more here than almost anywhere else on the East African coast.
Zanzibar and nearby islands compared
| Location | Best known for | Tide/wind consideration |

| Pemba/Mafia | Diving, whale sharks (seasonal) | Quieter, less developed |
Highlights
- Paje, for watersports
- Nungwi, for swimming and nightlife
- Pemba and Mafia, for quiet and diving
01
Paje, for watersports
Paje's wide, shallow sand flats and consistent trade winds, strongest from December to February and June to September, have made it East Africa's main kitesurfing hub.
Swimming at low tide can mean a long walk out over the flats, which suits watersports more than lazy ocean swims.

02
Nungwi, for swimming and nightlife
Deeper water close to shore keeps Nungwi swimmable through most of the tide cycle, and its cluster of bars and sunset dhow cruises give it a livelier feel than the east coast villages.

03
Pemba and Mafia, for quiet and diving
Pemba, a short flight or ferry from Unguja, has fewer visitors and some of the region's best diving along its steep coral walls.
Mafia Island's marine park is known for coral gardens and, seasonally, for gentle encounters with whale sharks that gather to feed on plankton.
