Zanzibar honeymoon: beaches, spice and Stone Town
Zanzibar is a classic honeymoon finish after a safari, and the coast you choose — north, east or Stone Town — shapes the mood of the whole stay.
Zanzibar Honeymoon · Zanzibar beaches · Kenya honeymoon
Choose your Zanzibar beach around the pace you want for the end of your honeymoon. After days of early starts on safari, Zanzibar's warm water and slower pace make an obvious contrast for a honeymoon.
The island's coasts differ enough in tide, scenery and atmosphere that picking the right one matters more here than on most beach holidays.
Choosing a Zanzibar coast for a honeymoon
| Coast | Swimming at low tide | Atmosphere |
|---|---|---|
| North (Nungwi) | Good, most tides | Lively, sunset-focused |
| East (Matemwe) | Limited at low tide | Quiet, boutique, private |
| Stone Town | Not a beach stay | Historic, cultural, one-night add-on |
Highlights
- North: Nungwi
- East: Matemwe
- A night in Stone Town
01
North: Nungwi
Nungwi keeps swimmable water at most states of the tide, unlike much of the island's east coast, and has a livelier string of beach bars and restaurants.
Sunset here, over open water rather than reef flats, is one of Zanzibar's most photographed moments.

02
East: Matemwe
Matemwe and the villages nearby offer a quieter, more boutique feel, with fewer hotels and long stretches of pale sand backed by palm groves.
Tides here swing further, so some mornings and afternoons leave a wide stretch of exposed reef flat rather than swimmable water.

03
A night in Stone Town
Adding a night in Stone Town bookends a beach stay with history: narrow alleys, carved doorways, the old slave market site and rooftop restaurants looking over the harbour.
It's a good use of an arrival or departure night rather than a dedicated beach day.
