Kenya and Tanzania combined safari

The Mara and Serengeti are one unbroken ecosystem split only by a political border, and combining both countries gives a fuller picture of the migration and the landscapes around it.

A Kenya–Tanzania journey works best when your border crossing supports the route rather than interrupts it. Wildlife doesn't recognise the Kenya-Tanzania border, and a herd that crosses the Mara River one week may well be back in the Serengeti the next.

For travellers with enough time, seeing both sides of this ecosystem, plus each country's other highlights, is well worth the logistics.

Why combine the two

Following the migration across the border lets you track the herds more flexibly by season, and each country brings distinct landscapes and parks beyond the shared ecosystem, from Amboseli's elephants in Kenya to Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania.

Why combine the two: In memory of one of the rare Elephant Twins, who died this week. Amboseli National Park (44852745994)
Twin elephants, a male and female, were delivered at the end of May 2018 by 39-year old "Paru," on the left, who lives in a herd of around 40 elephants. Kenyan Wildlife Service officials say surviving twin births amongst elephants is rare, with the last known birth of surviving elephant twins taking place in Amboseli in 1980. Given the sheer size of the animals, twin births are rare, as gestation of African elephants normally lasts for around 22-months. In July 2018, I was fortunate enough to seCredits

Crossing between countries

Flights via Nairobi, Kilimanjaro or Arusha connect the two countries' safari circuits in well under two hours, making the crossing itself straightforward logistically, even if it adds an extra travel day to the itinerary.

How long to allow

Twelve to fourteen days gives enough time to properly explore both countries' parks without the trip feeling like a series of rushed overnight stops.
