In the dry months the Tarangire river becomes the only reliable water for miles, and the elephant concentrations that follow are among the highest anywhere in Africa. Ancient baobabs and rolling ridges make it the most distinctive landscape on the northern circuit.
In the green season much of the game disperses north, so Tarangire is best treated as a dry-season park.
Why Tarangire National Park is unique
- Northern Tanzania's largest elephant gatherings
- Ancient baobab landscapes
- Dry-season wildlife concentrated along the river

- Airstrip served by light aircraft from Arusha and the Serengeti.
Where to base yourself
- Inside the park for the river circuits

Planning notes from our team
- Prioritise Tarangire if you travel between July and October; drop it in April and May.
Common questions
Is Tarangire worth adding to a short trip?
In the dry season, absolutely — the elephant viewing rivals anywhere in Africa. On a five-day green-season trip we would rather give those nights to the Serengeti.
