Meru is fed by streams running off Mount Kenya, giving it doum palm groves, swamps and green riverine strips through savannah. It is where Elsa the lioness was released, and it still feels like a park you have to yourself.
Visitor numbers are low, which means sightings take a little more patience but come without a queue of vehicles.

Common questions
Is Meru good for a first safari?
It is better as a second or third park. First-timers usually want the density of the Mara or Amboseli first.
