Balance paid closer to travel
Lewa turned a cattle ranch into one of Africa's most quoted conservation successes, and its rhino and Grevy's zebra populations are now nationally significant. Guest numbers are deliberately small, so sightings are almost always yours alone.
It sits within the wider Lewa–Borana landscape, with fences dropped between them, giving the wildlife — and your guide — a very large area to work with.
Why Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is unique
- UNESCO-listed rhino conservation landscape
- Very low visitor and vehicle density
- Horseback, walking and camel safaris
- Exceptional Grevy's zebra viewing
Park, conservation & permit fees

When to go
Year-round
Consistently good; June to October and January to March are driest.
Getting there
- Daily light aircraft from Nairobi Wilson to Lewa airstrip.
- Road via Nanyuki and Isiolo, around five hours.
Where to base yourself
- Lewa's own small lodges and family houses
- Borana Conservancy next door, with Mount Kenya views
Planning notes from our team
- Exclusive-use houses here work extremely well for families and small groups.
- Book far ahead — bed numbers across the whole conservancy are tiny.
Common questions
Why is Lewa more expensive?
Guest numbers are capped to protect the wildlife, and conservancy fees fund rhino security and community programmes. You are paying for exclusivity and for the conservation model itself.
