Nakuru is compact, fenced and one of the surest places in East Africa to see rhino — both black and white — often within the first hour. Acacia woodland, yellow-barked fever tree forest and the lake shore itself sit in a natural amphitheatre of Rift Valley escarpment.
Flamingo numbers rise and fall with the lake's water level and alkalinity, so treat the pink shoreline as a bonus rather than a certainty. The rhino, Rothschild's giraffe and tree-resting lions are the reliable draw.

When to go
June – March
Good access and steady game viewing throughout.
April – May
Wet tracks; still passable but muddier and quieter.
Getting there
- Straightforward drive from Nairobi on the Nakuru highway.
- Commonly combined with Lake Naivasha on the way to or from the Mara.
Where to base yourself
- Inside the park for early-morning rhino drives
- Nakuru town and Lanet for value lodges
- Lake Elmenteita and Soysambu for quieter, more characterful stays
Planning notes from our team
- One night is enough for most itineraries; two if birding is a priority.
- Water levels have risen over the past decade and drowned some old tracks — routes change season to season.
Common questions
Are the flamingos always there?
No. When the lake freshens, the flamingos move to Bogoria, Elmenteita or Natron. We will tell you honestly what current conditions look like before you book.
