Balance paid closer to travel
Arusha National Park is small and often skipped, which is a shame: it has crater forest, the Momella lakes, giraffe on open glades and Mount Meru rising to 4,566 m behind it. There are no lions, which is precisely why walking and canoeing are allowed.
It is the ideal first or last day of a Tanzania trip — close to Kilimanjaro airport and completely different in character from the savannah parks.

When to go
June – February
Drier, with the clearest Kilimanjaro and Meru views.
Getting there
- About 45 minutes from Arusha, 60 from Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Where to base yourself
- Coffee-estate lodges between Arusha and the park gate
- Usa River, convenient for early Meru trek starts
Planning notes from our team
- Trek Meru before Kilimanjaro if you have the days — it improves your summit odds substantially.
Common questions
Is it worth a day if I am heading to the Serengeti?
Yes, if you arrive in the afternoon and have a spare morning. Canoeing and walking here are experiences the Serengeti cannot offer.
