Zanzibar after safari: how to plan the perfect beach finish
After a week of dawn starts, Zanzibar offers warm water, spice-scented streets and days with no schedule at all. Here is how to plan the beach half of the trip properly.
Zanzibar Beaches · safari and beach holidays · Zanzibar honeymoon
After the safari's early mornings, you may want nothing more than a beach and an unhurried breakfast. Following a run of early safari mornings, Zanzibar tends to feel like exactly the right reward: warm Indian Ocean water, the history and scent of Stone Town, and a stretch of days without any set schedule.
Here is how to plan the beach portion of a bush-and-beach trip.
Choosing where to stay on Zanzibar
| Area | Tide behaviour | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|
| North coast (Nungwi/Kendwa) | Swimmable at all tides | Travellers wanting reliable beach time |
| East coast | Dramatic tidal swings | Quieter, more remote atmosphere |
| Stone Town | Not beach-focused | History, food and culture |
Highlights
- How many nights to allow
- Choosing which part of the island
- Getting there straight from safari
- Things to do beyond the beach itself
01
How many nights to allow
Three to four nights hits the sweet spot for most travellers, long enough to properly unwind without stalling the trip's momentum. Keen divers or dedicated beach lovers often happily extend that to a full week.

02
Choosing which part of the island
The north coast, around Nungwi and Kendwa, offers the most reliable swimming at any tide. The east coast is quieter but far more tidal, with the ocean retreating dramatically at low tide, which is beautiful but worth knowing about in advance. Stone Town is worth a night or a full day on its own for its history, food and architecture.

03
Getting there straight from safari
Direct flights connect the Serengeti and Nairobi with Zanzibar, meaning it's entirely possible to leave camp after a morning game drive and be on the beach by late afternoon, provided connections are timed well.

04
Things to do beyond the beach itself
Spice farm tours, sunset dhow cruises, snorkelling around Mnemba Atoll, the red colobus monkeys of Jozani Forest and the markets of Stone Town are all easy ways to fill a day or two if lying on sand loses its appeal.

Dos
- Finish your safari with the beach to unwind
- Dress modestly in Stone Town and villages
- Check tide times for swimming and snorkelling
- Use reef-safe sunscreen
- Carry some cash for markets and tips
Don'ts
- Don't wear swimwear away from the beach
- Don't touch or stand on coral
- Don't photograph locals without asking
- Don't leave valuables unattended on the sand
- Don't underestimate the midday sun

Frequently asked questions
Is Zanzibar a better beach add-on than the Kenyan coast?
They're different rather than one being clearly better; Zanzibar brings Stone Town's culture into the mix, while Diani offers more straightforward logistics from the Mara. Both work very well.
When is the best time to visit Zanzibar?
June to October and December to February tend to be the driest stretches, while the long rains from roughly March to May are generally best avoided.
Can I fly directly home from Zanzibar?
Yes, Zanzibar has an international airport with decent connections, so there's no need to backtrack through the mainland.
