Uganda gorilla safari in Bwindi
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest pairs mountain gorillas with chimpanzees and savannah game, making Uganda the richest single-country primate and wildlife trip in the region.
Uganda Gorilla Trekking · Bwindi gorilla safari · Rwanda gorilla trekking
Book your Bwindi lodge around your permit sector, not the other way round. Bwindi protects close to half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas across four separate trekking sectors, each with its own feel, access road and lodge cluster.
Because Uganda sits beside Kibale's chimpanzees and Queen Elizabeth's open savannah, a Bwindi trip rarely stays just about gorillas.
Bwindi's four gorilla sectors compared
| Sector | Drive from Kampala/Kigali | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Buhoma | Long from Kampala, easiest lodge access | First-time visitors wanting established infrastructure |
| Ruhija | Central, mid-length drive | Travellers linking Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi |
| Rushaga | Closest to Rwanda border | Combining a standard trek with habituation experiences |
Highlights
- Choosing the right sector
- Adding Kibale for chimpanzees
- Adding Queen Elizabeth for savannah
01
Choosing the right sector
Buhoma, in the north, has the most established lodges and easiest road access; Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south are quieter but demand a longer drive from Kigali or Kampala.
Rushaga offers the most habituated gorilla families in one sector, which is useful for travellers who also want a second, longer gorilla habituation experience.

02
Adding Kibale for chimpanzees
Kibale Forest, a day's drive north of Bwindi, has some of the highest chimp-sighting success rates in Africa thanks to long-term habituation.
A dawn chimp trek typically runs two to three hours and feels markedly more energetic and vocal than a gorilla visit.

03
Adding Queen Elizabeth for savannah
Queen Elizabeth National Park sits between Bwindi and Kibale, making it a natural stop rather than a detour.
A boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel regularly shows hippos, buffalo and elephant drinking along the banks, plus prolific birdlife.
- Ishasha sector, in the park's south, is known for lions that climb into fig trees during the heat of the day
