Rwanda packs an entire gorilla adventure into a compact corner of the country. Volcanoes National Park sits roughly two and a half hours from Kigali airport, so even if you have only five or six days free, you can consider a trek without devoting the entire visit to transfers.

Understanding the permit system, the walk itself, and where to base yourself turns a once-in-a-lifetime moment into a smooth, well-paced trip rather than a rushed dash.

Permits and timing

Rwanda sets a daily cap on gorilla permits, and the Volcanoes groups fill quickly in the June–September and December–February dry windows.

Booking months ahead, especially for a specific travel date, is the single biggest factor in a stress-free trip; last-minute permits do appear but cannot be relied on.

Mt. Muhavura, the Mountain on the left, is also known as Mt. Muhabura (as pronounced by the native people — the Bafumbira living in Kisoro in Uganda). And on the right is Mt. Gahinga. These two mountains are found in the Mgahinga National Park famous for Gorillas in Uganda.Credits

What the trek is actually like

Rangers track each family's overnight location the evening before, which narrows the walk considerably, but distances still vary from under an hour to four or five hours depending on where the group has moved.

Trails climb through farmland edges before entering dense bamboo and montane forest; hiring a porter supports local livelihoods and can help on steep, muddy stretches. Confirm the hire charge before your trek.

  • A walking pole, rented locally, steadies footing on volcanic soil

There are two populations, one is found in the Virunga volcanic mountains of Central Africa, the other in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . this photograph was taken in Virunga National Park in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Basing yourself near the park

Lodges along the Kinigi road near park headquarters cut the pre-dawn briefing commute to minutes, which matters when wake-up calls start around 5am.

Many travellers add two nights at Lake Kivu afterwards, a calm counterpoint of swimming and boat rides once the trek is behind them.

Basing yourself near the park: Road to the Sabyinyo
Mount Sabyinyo (also Sabinyo, Sabinio) is an extinct volcano in eastern Africa, in the Virunga Mountains. The summit of the mountain, at 3,645 metres , marks the intersection of the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. It also lies within the adjoining national parks established by these countries: Virunga National Park in the Congo, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Frequently asked questions

How fit do you need to be to trek gorillas?

Reasonably fit rather than athletic. Rangers assign easier-access families to less mobile guests, and porters carry packs and offer a steadying arm on steep ground.
