Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale and Nyungwe
Chimpanzee trekking trades the calm of gorillas for noise, speed and high drama, and Kibale and Nyungwe are the two best places in East Africa to try it.
Chimpanzee Trekking Uganda · Kibale chimp tracking · Nyungwe chimpanzees
If you enjoy an active forest walk, chimpanzee trekking offers a very different day from gorilla tracking. Where a gorilla family tends to sit and feed quietly, a chimpanzee community moves fast, screams, drums on tree trunks and swings through the canopy — trekking them is a different kind of thrill entirely.
Kibale in Uganda and Nyungwe in Rwanda both offer habituated communities, but the terrain and odds of a close sighting differ.
Kibale versus Nyungwe for chimp trekking
| Factor | Kibale, Uganda | Nyungwe, Rwanda |
|---|---|---|
| Sighting reliability | Very high, long-habituated groups | Good but less certain, larger range |
| Terrain | Mostly gentle forest trails | Steeper, more physically demanding |
| Scenery bonus | Classic lowland rainforest | Canopy walkway and valley views |
Highlights
- Kibale Forest, Uganda
- Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda
- Pairing chimps with gorillas
01
Kibale Forest, Uganda
Kibale has some of the continent's best-studied, longest-habituated chimp communities, which keeps sighting rates high even on a single morning trek.
Treks usually last two to three hours on reasonably clear forest trails, making it accessible for most fitness levels.

02
Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda
Nyungwe's chimp groups range over a larger, steeper territory, so tracking can take longer and sightings can be harder to obtain than in Kibale.
The payoff is dramatic rainforest scenery, including a canopy walkway suspended above the valley floor, well worth the extra effort.

03
Pairing chimps with gorillas
Because chimp permits are separate from gorilla permits, an eight- to ten-day trip can realistically include both, usually gorillas first given their tighter permit availability.
Early mornings are standard for both treks, so building in a rest day between them helps avoid fatigue.
