Murchison Falls safari: the Nile in full force

Murchison Falls combines a thunderous stretch of the Nile with open savannah game viewing, making it one of Uganda's most complete short safaris.

You can build a Murchison Falls stay around the river as well as the game drives. The entire Nile River is forced through an 8-metre gap in the rock at Murchison Falls, creating one of the most dramatic natural sights on the continent.

Around it, the park's savannah and riverbanks hold elephant, giraffe, lion and prolific birdlife, giving the destination far more range than the falls alone.

Highlights

  • The Nile boat safari
  • Game drives on the northern bank

01

Seeing the falls

A short hike to the top of the falls puts you right beside the churning water, while a viewpoint lower down shows the full gorge from a distance.

Both perspectives are worth the time if your schedule allows; the contrast between the narrow top and the wide plunge pool below is striking.

The Nile boat safari

A boat cruise upstream toward the base of the falls is the park's signature activity, passing basking hippos, crocodiles and herons, kingfishers and the occasional shoebill stork.

Afternoon light tends to bring more animals down to the water's edge, so a later cruise can be rewarding for photography.

An adult male is around 1.6 m (5.2 ft) tall at the shoulder and can weigh up to 942 kg (2,077 lb) with a typical range of 500–600 kg (1,100–1,300 lb). It is the second-largest antelope in the world, being slightly smaller on average than the giant eland. Mainly a herbivore, its diet is primarily grasses and leaves.Credits

Game drives on the northern bank

The delta and northern savannah hold healthy numbers of Rothschild's giraffe, elephant and lion, with sightings strongest in the early morning and late afternoon.

Self-drive and guided options both exist, though a guided vehicle generally finds more game thanks to local radio networks.
