Kidepo Valley: Uganda's most remote safari
Kidepo Valley rewards the journey to Uganda's far northeast with dramatic mountain scenery and some of the emptiest game drives left in East Africa.
Kidepo Valley National Park · Uganda safari
Tucked against the Kenyan and South Sudanese borders, Kidepo Valley National Park sees a fraction of the visitors that Uganda's southern parks do.
That isolation, plus mountain-ringed valleys and healthy predator numbers, makes it worth considering if you have already done a first safari and want something wilder.
Kidepo versus Uganda's other savannah parks
| Park | Visitor numbers | Standout feature |
|---|---|---|
| Kidepo Valley | Very low | Remote mountain scenery, cheetah |
| Queen Elizabeth | Moderate | Tree-climbing lions, Kazinga Channel |
| Murchison Falls | Higher | Nile boat safari and waterfall |
Highlights

01
The landscape and wildlife
Kidepo's golden valleys sit beneath the Morungole and Napore mountain ranges, giving game drives a scale and backdrop unlike anywhere else in Uganda.
Buffalo, elephant and lion are regularly seen, along with cheetah — rare elsewhere in the country — though overall animal density is lower than in the Mara or Serengeti.

02
Getting there
Kidepo is roughly a two-hour charter flight from Entebbe, which is the practical way to fit it into a trip of a week or so.
The road route from Kampala takes a full, long day and is best suited to travellers with time to spare or an interest in the drive itself.

03
Who it suits
Kidepo tends to appeal most to returning safari travellers chasing solitude rather than first-time visitors prioritising classic Big Five areas.
Lodge choice is limited, which is part of the appeal — fewer vehicles, fewer other guests, and a genuine sense of remoteness.

Dos
- Choose lodges with family rooms and pools
- Book a private vehicle to set your own pace
- Keep game drives shorter for young children
- Bring games and binoculars for each child
- Check age limits for activities in advance
Don'ts
- Don't over-schedule long drives in one day
- Don't let children wander at unfenced camps
- Don't forget malaria prevention advice from a doctor
- Don't skip rest time in the afternoon heat
- Don't pack too much — small planes limit luggage

Frequently asked questions
Is Kidepo worth the trip?
