Hot air balloon safari early in the morning. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is a large game reserve in Kenya named in honor of the Maasai people (the ancestral inhabitants of the area). It is globally famous for its exceptional population of lions, leopards and cheetahs. The wildebeest are the dominant inhabitants of the Maasai Mara, and their numbers are estimated in the millions. Around July of each year, these ungainly animals migrate north from the Serengeti plains in search of fresh pastu

The lion is one of the five big cats. Some males exceeding 250 kg in weight it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Lions live for 10–14 years in the wild. Males seldom live longer than 10 years, as injuries sustained from continual fighting with rival males greatly reduce their longevity

Male cubs are excluded from their maternal pride when they reach maturity at around two or three years of age. Some lions are "nomads" that range widely and move around sporadically, either in pairs or alone. Pairs are more frequent among related males who have been excluded from their birth pride. A lion may switch lifestyles; nomads can become residents and vice versa. Interactions between prides and nomads tend to be hostile, although pride females in estrus allow nomadic males to approach th

The string of protected areas along Uganda's western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the Albertine Rift, harbors half the world's mountain gorillas, huge populations of hippos, as well as elephants, chimpanzees, lions, and much more. Because this wildlife is losing ground, USAID and the Wildlife Conservation Society aim to investigate the effects of climate change and habitat destruction on the

The chimpanzees’ natural home range spans from Senegal on the West African coast, through the central forested belt of Africa, to Uganda. They are not native to Kenya, but when a rescue centre in Burundi had to be closed due to the civil war outbreak in 1993 – Ol Pejeta opened its doors. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established with an agreement between the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Jane Goodall Institute. This is but a 'trailer' of the big movie. I swore to return to Kenya sometime in the future, during June- July to witness the great migration. (Oct/ Nov

The black tear marks that begin from the corner of the eye and run down the sides of their face from their nose down to their mouths are a unique feature has big benefits for cheetahs. These markings play an important role for by reflecting the glare of the sun while hunting. They are especially helpful in open plains where the glare of the sun is extremely bright. In addition, by minimizing glare, Cheetah can remain focused on moving prey during what is usually a very high-speed chase. The Ol P

The Masai giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchii), also spelled Maasai giraffe, also called Kilimanjaro giraffe, is the largest subspecies of giraffe, making it the tallest land animal. It is native to East Africa. The Masai giraffe can be found in central and southern Kenya and in Tanzania. It has distinctive, irregular, jagged, star-like blotches which extend to the hooves. Plains zebras have a wide range in east and southern Africa. They usually live in treeless grasslands and savanna woodlands and are absent from deserts, rainforests, and wetlands. This species’ habitat is shrinking, however, and plains zebras are now extinct in Burundi and Lesotho.

A group of Masai Zebra settles down to a late lunch. Pity these creatures hae to spend all their lives in a sand pit. In the wild, they live in more lush surroundings. The plains zebra, also known as the common zebra or Burchell's zebra, is the most common and geographically widespread species of zebra. It ranges from the south of Ethiopia through East Africa to as far south as Botswana and eastern South Africa. For pictures of the Masai Zebra in the wild, see my Kenya Animals set. (Al Ain, UAE,

On July 28, 2022, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of a sunny mid-winter day on the southern tip of South Africa. Clear skies, punctuated only by a few clusters of cloud over high mountain peaks, allowed a detailed view of the diverse topography of the Western Cape region, all set against the dark waters of the South Pacific Ocean (west) and Indian Ocean (east). Juniper Dunes Wilderness: The Juniper Dunes Wilderness preserves the northernmost growth of western juniper, some of which have been around for 150 years, along with windswept sand dunes measuring 130 feet in height and 1,000 feet in width. The Uncompahgre Wilderness in Colorado consists of gently rolling alpine tundra meadows, rugged, mountainous landscapes, and densely-forested canyons within the north-central San Juan Mountains. This wilderness boasts two ""fourteeners"" (on USFS-managed land) and more than 34 other peaks that tower over 13,000 feet in elevation. Visitors can explore over 100 miles of trails that provide excellent opportunities for various forms of recreation. Several forks of the Cimarron River roar through the

The Powderhorn Wilderness in Colorado is found in a rugged, glacier-carved landscape of the northern reaches of the San Juan Mountains. The area consists of large expanses of alpine tundra, spruce forests, and several alpine lakes at nearly 12,000 feet in elevation. Breathtaking views of the San Juan Mountains are available in this wilderness. Above 12,000 feet are two high-elevation plateaus that make up the largest relatively flat expanse of alpine tundra in the lower 48 states. These plateaus

Portions of the Inyo, Sylvania, and Piper Mountains, for which this wilderness takes its name, can be found within this area of the California Desert. Alluvial fans cover large portions of the eastern side of the wilderness, with plains and hills also part of the landscape. Desert bighorn sheep habitat can be found in three areas within this wilderness. Sagebrush and juniper-pinyon woodland are the common vegetation, with conifer trees on the higher elevations. Kanab Creek Wilderness, one of the major tributaries of the Colorado River, contains a vast network of vertical walled gorges. Elevations within this wilderness range from 2,000 feet at the creek to 6,000 feet at the canyon rims. Extreme heat and scarcity of water during the summer make spring and fall the ideal times to visit this wilderness.
