Safety and Habituation
Every trek is led by armed rangers and trackers. The families visited are habituated, meaning they are accustomed to human presence. Strict rules apply: groups are capped at eight, and visitors must maintain distance to protect these primates from human respiratory diseases.

Physical Requirements
Treks vary from one to seven hours depending on the gorillas' movements. The terrain is often steep, muddy, and at altitude. However, local porters are available for hire to assist with bags, and guides always pace the group to the slowest member’s ability.

The Viewing Hour
Once trackers locate the family, you are granted exactly one hour. You might observe juveniles playing or a silverback resting nearby. It is a quiet, intense experience that requires sensible packing, including gardening gloves for vegetation and waterproof hiking boots for the forest floor.

Uganda or Rwanda?
Rwanda offers easier logistics from Kigali at a higher permit cost. Uganda’s Bwindi is more affordable and rugged but requires longer travel times. Both provide world-class encounters within protected rainforests.
