How much does a safari cost per person?

Safari prices swing enormously between operators and camps, and understanding what actually drives the cost helps you spend your budget where it counts.

When two safari quotes look very different, ask what you're actually getting for the difference. Two itineraries covering the same parks can differ hugely in price once accommodation tier, season and transport choices are factored in.

Breaking the cost down into its main components makes it easier to decide where to spend generously and where to save.

01

Accommodation tier

Camps range from simple tented comfort camps to architecturally striking, ultra-luxury lodges, and this single choice usually swings the total trip cost more than anything else.

A comfortable mid-tier camp with knowledgeable guides often delivers a very similar wildlife experience to a far pricier option on the same reserve.

02

Season

Peak dry-season months, when wildlife viewing is at its easiest, carry the highest rates across most camps; the green season brings lower rates, fewer other vehicles, and lush scenery, at the cost of some rainy afternoons.

How you move between parks

Light-aircraft transfers between parks cost more than road transfers but save a full day or more of driving on longer circuits, which matters most on itineraries covering several distant regions.

Frequently asked questions

What's included in a safari price?

A transparent safari quote should clearly itemise accommodation, meals, game drives, park and conservation fees, and transfers, so compare quotes on that basis rather than headline price alone.
