Big Five safari: where to see all five

Seeing lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino in one trip is realistic in East Africa, provided your route includes somewhere rhino actually live.

Your chances depend on where you go, how long you stay and a little luck. The Big Five label dates back to big-game hunting days, but it remains a useful shorthand for route planning, since rhino in particular are confined to a small number of protected areas.

A well-planned Kenya or Tanzania itinerary can realistically tick off all five, though it takes deliberate planning rather than luck.

01

Lion and leopard

The Mara-Serengeti ecosystem offers some of the best big-cat sightings in Africa, with private conservancies bordering the Mara reserve often giving closer, less crowded viewing than the main reserve itself.

Elephant and buffalo

Both are widespread across East Africa's major parks, with particularly large herds in Amboseli, where elephants are set against Kilimanjaro's backdrop, and Tarangire during the dry season.

Twin elephants, a male and female, were delivered at the end of May 2018 by 39-year old "Paru," on the left, who lives in a herd of around 40 elephants. Kenyan Wildlife Service officials say surviving twin births amongst elephants is rare, with the last known birth of surviving elephant twins taking place in Amboseli in 1980. Given the sheer size of the animals, twin births are rare, as gestation of African elephants normally lasts for around 22-months. In July 2018, I was fortunate enough to seCredits

Rhino

Rhino sightings require specific destinations: Ngorongoro Crater holds a small black rhino population, Kenya's Laikipia conservancies protect both black and white rhino, and Lake Nakuru National Park is fenced specifically to safeguard its rhino.
