Lake Nakuru and Naivasha: Rift Valley safari stops

The Rift Valley lakes turn a long transfer into part of the safari, adding rhino, hippo and birdlife you won't see on the open plains.

If you're driving between Nairobi and the Mara, consider what a Rift Valley stop adds to your journey. Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha sit on the main road between Nairobi and the Mara, and both reward a one-night stop rather than being driven straight past. Between them they add wildlife the savannah parks don't offer: fenced rhino populations, hippo pods and, at times, flamingos.

01

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru National Park is fully fenced, which has helped it build up strong black and white rhino numbers, alongside tree-climbing lions. Flamingo numbers fluctuate significantly with water levels and are not guaranteed on any given visit.

02

Lake Naivasha

Naivasha is unfenced and offers boat rides among hippo pods, fish eagle sightings and a walking safari on Crescent Island, where the absence of large predators allows game walks on foot.

Fitting them into the itinerary

A single overnight at either lake converts what would otherwise be a long, unbroken road transfer into a worthwhile stop, which families in particular tend to appreciate.
