Kenya beach holiday after safari: Diani, Watamu or Lamu

Diani, Watamu and Lamu offer three distinct moods for ending a Kenya safari, each a short flight from the Mara or Nairobi.

Your ideal Kenyan beach depends on whether you want gentle downtime, water activities or coastal culture. Finishing a safari on the Indian Ocean is one of the simplest upgrades to a Kenya trip. The coast isn't one experience but three quite different ones, and picking the right stretch matters as much as picking the right camp inland.

Highlights

  • Diani
  • Watamu
  • Lamu

01

Diani

Diani has long stretches of white sand, a protective reef and the widest range of resorts on the coast, making it the easiest choice for families or a first beach stay.

02

Watamu

Watamu Marine National Park offers snorkelling and occasional turtle sightings in a smaller, more relaxed village setting — a good match for couples and divers.

03

Lamu

Lamu's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is car-free, built around narrow Swahili-style streets and dhow sailing — slower-paced and more culturally immersive than Diani or Watamu.
