Tsavo safari: Kenya's wild, uncrowded giant
Red elephants, lava fields and genuine solitude — Tsavo rewards travellers heading between Nairobi and the coast.
Tsavo National Park · Kenya safari holidays
Tsavo East and West together form one of Kenya's largest protected areas, far less visited than the Mara and positioned conveniently between Nairobi and the beach resorts of Diani and Watamu. It suits you if you want space as much as sightings.
Tsavo against two alternative bush-and-beach starts
| Park | Strength | Distance to coast |
|---|---|---|
| Tsavo East/West | Space, red elephants, low visitor numbers | 2-3 hours to Diani/Watamu |
| Shimba Hills | Compact, close to Diani, sable antelope | Under 1 hour to Diani |
| Amboseli | Elephants and Kilimanjaro views | Further from coast, pairs better with Mara |
Highlights
- The red elephants
- Tsavo West's varied terrain
- A natural bridge to the coast
01
The red elephants
Tsavo's elephants dust-bathe in the park's iron-rich soil, which stains their hide a distinctive rust colour. Herds concentrate around waterholes through the dry season, roughly June to October and January to February, when sightings are most dependable.

02
Tsavo West's varied terrain
Lava flows, natural springs at Mzima Springs and low hills give Tsavo West more textured scenery than the flatter plains of Tsavo East, with underwater viewing of hippo and fish at Mzima a notable extra.

03
A natural bridge to the coast
Tsavo sits directly on the route from Nairobi to Diani or Watamu, making it an easy, low-effort addition to a bush-and-beach itinerary rather than a detour.

Frequently asked questions
Is Tsavo good for a first safari?
It works best combined with a coastal stay. Travellers wanting a first safari focused purely on big cats are usually better starting with the Mara.
