How many days do you need on safari?
How to match trip length to what you actually want, instead of cramming too many parks into too few days.
African Safari Holidays · Kenya safari · Tanzania safari
The most common planning mistake is trying to see everything in a short window. Every transfer between parks eats half a day or more, so a packed one-week itinerary can end up spending more time on the road than in front of animals.
Here's a realistic way to think about how long your trip should be.
Matching length to ambition
| Trip length | Parks/stops | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| 3–4 days | One park | Add-on to business or beach travel |
| 5–7 days | Two parks | Classic first safari |
| 12–14 days | Multiple countries/regions | Grand tour with beach finish |
Highlights
- Three to four days: the taster
- Five to seven days: the classic first safari
- Eight to eleven days: the full circuit
- Twelve to fourteen days: the grand tour
01
Three to four days: the taster
One park, properly explored, suits travellers bolting a safari onto a business trip or a beach holiday. Pick the single destination that best matches your travel month rather than trying to add a second stop.

02
Five to seven days: the classic first safari
Two parks with roughly three nights each — the Mara paired with Amboseli, say, or the Serengeti with Ngorongoro — is the sweet spot for most first-time visitors, and flying between the two turns what could be a driving slog into a relaxed trip.

03
Eight to eleven days: the full circuit
Three or four destinations, or a safari combined with gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda. This length allows room to slow down, add a walking safari or cultural visit, and shrug off a rainy afternoon without feeling cheated.

04
Twelve to fourteen days: the grand tour
Kenya and Tanzania combined, following the migration across the border, or a safari rounded off with several nights on Zanzibar or the Kenyan coast. At this length variety earns more than quantity — mixing savannah, forest and beach beats stacking similar parks back to back.

Frequently asked questions
Is five days actually enough for a worthwhile safari?
Yes, provided you focus on one or two parks and fly between them rather than trying to cover four in that time.
How many days should a combined Kenya and Tanzania trip be?
Ten days as a realistic minimum, with twelve to fourteen ideal once border crossings and transfers are accounted for.
Can gorilla trekking fit into a one-week trip?
Yes — three nights in Rwanda or Uganda pairs reasonably well with four nights in Kenya or Tanzania.
