Is a hot-air balloon safari worth it?

The balloon flight is usually the single most expensive activity on a safari itinerary, and also the one guests most often name as the trip's highlight. Here's how to decide if it's for you.

A hot-air balloon flight tends to stand out as the priciest single activity on most safari itineraries, yet it is also the experience guests most frequently describe afterwards as the highlight of the entire trip. Whether it's worth it for you depends on a few honest factors.

01

What the morning actually involves

The day starts well before dawn, with coffee at the launch site followed by roughly an hour aloft as the sun comes up over the plains. Herds move quietly below, and the whole experience is silent apart from the occasional roar of the burners. Landing is usually followed by a full breakfast set up in the bush.

02

What you actually see from above

The real appeal is perspective rather than proximity: the pattern of the herds moving together, the course of rivers, and the overall scale of the ecosystem below. During migration season over the Mara or Serengeti, watching long columns of wildebeest from the air is genuinely striking.

What you actually see from above: Great Migration in Mara River, Serengeti by Tanzania GET Safaris
Nature's masterpiece is that every year the plains of East Africa are home to the world's greatest wildlife spectacles movement, whereby more than 1.4 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle move from one place of Tanzania to Kenya in search of good food, water and breading grounds. This great migration is often described as a set circuit that occurs between Tanzania's Serengeti plains in the south and Kenya's Maasai Mara in the north, but the reality of the migration iCredits

Who might want to skip it

Anyone with a significant fear of heights, very young children (most operators set a minimum age around seven), and travellers working with a tight budget may find a private vehicle for the same morning delivers more actual wildlife viewing for the cost.

Booking it sensibly

Balloon seats are limited and tend to sell out during peak season, so booking alongside the rest of your safari rather than waiting until arrival is important. Since flights depend on weather, scheduling it early in your stay leaves room for a second attempt if needed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a balloon safari typically cost?

It sits firmly in premium-activity territory, and current rates are best confirmed alongside your itinerary rather than relying on older published figures that change seasonally.

Is flying in a safari balloon safe?

Plan with a reputable operator, follow your guide’s instructions and check current government travel advice. Wildlife, remote travel and trekking carry risks; discuss your health, mobility and emergency cover before booking.

Should I book a balloon in the Mara or the Serengeti?

Both offer excellent flights. Choosing whichever park falls in the middle of your stay gives you the best chance of a second attempt if weather forces a postponement.
