Hot-air balloon safaris: is the Mara from the air worth it?
What the dawn flight over the Mara or Serengeti is actually like, and who gets the most out of booking one.
Fly-In Safari · hot air balloon safari · luxury safari
A balloon flight can be a memorable addition to your safari, but check what the booking includes. The hot-air balloon safari is the best-known add-on experience in East Africa: a dawn lift-off over the plains, roughly an hour drifting silently above the herds, and a champagne breakfast laid out in the bush afterwards. Here's a realistic sense of what to expect.
Is a balloon flight for you?
| Traveller type | Good fit? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keen photographer | Yes | Unique aerial perspective on the herds |
| Travelling with young children | Often not | Minimum age limits at most operators |
| Budget-conscious traveller | Maybe not | Meaningful add-on cost per person |

01
How the morning unfolds
Pickup from camp is typically around 4 to 5am. You watch the envelope inflate by the glow of the burner, then lift off just as the sun clears the horizon. The flight lasts roughly an hour, drifting with the wind — sometimes low enough to pick out individual elephants, sometimes high enough to take in the whole plain at once — before a full breakfast is served in the bush on landing.

02
What you'll actually see from up there
The scale of the herds only really registers from the air, and balloon height is magnificent for appreciating elephants, giraffes and hippos. Predators are considerably harder to spot from a moving balloon than from a vehicle at ground level.

03
Is it worth the extra cost?
It's a meaningful additional expense per person. It tends to suit travellers celebrating a special occasion, keen photographers, or anyone wanting one memorable splurge on the trip. It's less suited to anyone nervous of heights, families with young children given the minimum age limits most operators apply, or travellers who'd rather put the equivalent toward an extra night at a better camp.

Practical notes before booking
Book well ahead during peak season, since balloon capacity fills up quickly. Flights are weather-dependent and occasionally cancelled at short notice, with a refund if that happens. Dress in layers — it's genuinely cold before dawn and comfortably warm by breakfast.

Dos
- Book the balloon early — flights sell out
- Dress in warm layers for the pre-dawn start
- Bring a camera with a wrist strap
- Follow the pilot's landing position instructions
- Enjoy the bush breakfast after landing
Don'ts
- Don't book it for your last morning in case of weather delays
- Don't bring large bags into the basket
- Don't lean out of the basket
- Don't wear loose hats
- Don't fly if you're pregnant or have back problems
