7-day Kenya safari itinerary

Seven days is the practical sweet spot for a first Kenya safari — enough time for two or three areas without feeling rushed.

With seven days in Kenya, you can see contrasting landscapes without changing beds every night. A week in Kenya is long enough to see genuinely different landscapes and wildlife without constant packing and unpacking. The structure that tends to work best opens with elephants, adds a change of pace mid-trip, and finishes with several nights in the Maasai Mara.

  • Days 3-4: Laikipia or Lake Naivasha
  • Days 5-7: Maasai Mara

01

Days 1-2: Amboseli

Elephant herds and Kilimanjaro views open the trip, reached by road or a short flight from Nairobi, with two nights enough to settle in and get a clear-morning mountain view.

Days 1-2: Amboseli: Rare 3 month old elephant twins, Amboseli National Park. First born in Kenya for 38 years (42874258185)
The twin elephants, a male and female, were delivered at the end of May by 39-year old "Paru," who lives in a herd of around 40 elephants. Kenyan Wildlife Service officials say surviving twin births amongst elephants is rare, with the last known birth of surviving elephant twins taking place in Amboseli in 1980. Kenneth Ole Nashu is a Senior Warden in Amboseli National Park. "For the last 38 years, this park experienced a very unique scenario whereby we have an elephant giving birth to twins thaCredits

Days 3-4: Laikipia or Lake Naivasha

Laikipia adds a realistic chance of rhino and walking safaris; Naivasha offers a gentler boat-based stop. Either breaks up the itinerary and adds variety beyond standard game drives.

Days 5-7: Maasai Mara

Finishing with three nights in the Mara, ideally including a conservancy stay, means the trip builds toward its strongest wildlife days rather than opening with them.

The Tano Bora cheetahs were a coalition of five male cheetahs that lived in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. They were named after the Maa word for "The Magnificent Five". The coalition consisted of two pairs of brothers and a lead male. The Tano Bora cheetahs first came to the attention of the world in 2016. Frequently asked questions

Can I see the Big Five in seven days in Kenya?

It's realistic on a route that combines rhino country such as Laikipia with the Maasai Mara, though sightings of any single species are never guaranteed.
