The migration never stops; it follows rain and fresh grass in a clockwise loop. Timings shift each year, so camps are chosen for flexibility.

01

December to March

Herds graze the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu. Calving peaks around February, drawing big cats.

02

April and May

Long rains push the herds north-west through the central Serengeti. Quiet, green and good value.

03

June and July

The Western Corridor and Grumeti River host the first crossings, then herds reach the northern Serengeti.

04

August to October

Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara. The most dramatic — and busiest — period.

05

November

Short rains draw the herds back south through the eastern Serengeti.

06

Where to stay each season

Match your camp to the herds: southern Serengeti and Ndutu in January–March, central Serengeti in April–June, the Western Corridor around June, the northern Serengeti and Mara from July to October, and moving south again through November–December.

07

River crossings explained

Crossings on the Mara and Grumeti rivers are unpredictable. Herds may gather for hours and turn back. Staying close to the river for three or more nights gives the best odds.

08

Mobile camps

Seasonal tented camps relocate to follow the herds, keeping you near the action rather than driving hours each morning.

August and September for river crossings; February for calving and predator action.

Is the migration guaranteed?

No. Rainfall shifts the herds each year, which is why flexible camps and experienced guides matter.

Kenya or Tanzania for the migration?

Tanzania holds the herds for most of the year; the Mara is best from roughly July to October.
